Pheasant Species & Information
The order Galliformes includes several genera of pheasants. The native range of the pheasant species is Eurasia. They can be found in many countries, but are confined to introduced populations. The term “pheasant”, which is used to describe birds, is paraphyletic. Pheasants belong to both subfamilies Phasianinae (and Pavoninae), and are often more closely related than other pheasants to phasianids and turkeys.
The males are highly decorated, with bright colours. Males tend to be larger and have longer tails than females. Males do not play a role in raising the young.
The sound of a pheasant’s cry or call can be recognized by the fact that it sounds like an old rusted sink or valve.
In the winter, they eat mainly seeds, grains and roots. In summer, they eat insects, earthworms and snails. In the UK, they pose a threat as an imported species to native adders.
