They have been on Earth around 400,000 years, dwarfed by dinosaurs whose existence on the planet lasted for well over 130 million years. Humans are hard at work extinguishing all other species. We are doomed by a combination of our unique intelligence and our limitless urge to conquer territory and exploit all regions of the Earth. Perhaps, if we value life as an unparalleled cosmic miracle, Homo sapiens is a biological error. All of life is now being doomed by us. By comparison, the elephant is a wondrous, unique, and even benevolent animal of great intelligence, remarkable for its group and family life and for its disinclination to attack other animals.
