Honeybirds (genus Prodotiscus) are endemic to the sub-Saharan Africa. They belong to the Honeyguide family.
Three species are currently recognized:
- Wahlberg’s or Brown-backed Honeyguide (Prodotiscus regulus)
- Green-backed Honeybird (Prodotiscus zambesiae)
- Cassin’s Honeybird (Prodotiscus insignis)
Description
Honeybirds are among the smallest members of the honeyguide family. The plumage is drab colored – with grey or grey-green upperpart, and grey to whitish-grey underparts.
Their bills are slender compared to other members of the family.

Behavior
Unlike other honeyguides, honeybirds don’t feed on beeswax.
They parasitise nests of cisticolas, sunbirds and other dome-nesting bird species.
