A sponge dies as it’s individual cells die. Cells die when the cell structure breaks down, like any machine when the parts stop working the whole stops working. Many things can cause this including pollution, environmental changes and diseases, such as that responsible for the 2009 dies off of several sponge species in the Adriatic Sea.

I hope that you’re well. Can you please tell me how do sponges die? What’s the mechanism?
