African Green Pigeon (Treron calva): Other names: Afrikaans: papegaaiduif – French: Colombar à front nu – German: Rotnasen-Grüntaube – Dutch: Afrikaanse papegaaiduif. Description: This is shy bird that is usually found in small flocks hiding in dense foliage. It is quiet and unobtrusive and almost entirely arboreal, rarely coming to the ground. It feeds on fruit and can be locally common around fruiting fig trees (its gizzard is adapted for grinding fig seeds). Physical characteristics: When seen clambering around in a tree, the immediate impression is of a green, parrot-like bird. At closer range, this species is unmistakable with its green-and-yellow plumage and chestnut vent. When feeding, it climbs about in fruiting trees, sometimes hangs upside down on branches to obtain fruit. Habitat: The African Green Pigeon inhabits the African forest, bushveld and savanna. Always associated with fruiting trees, especially figs … Destination Kruger Park (great info & photos)

Bokhara Crack Tumbler
Bokhara Trumpeter: One of the most popular breeds of trumpeter in the U.S., the Bokhara Trumpeter is most noticeably characterized by its lengthy full muffs (feathers on the feet) and double crest which completely obscures the bird’s eyes and gives it a look reminiscent of the English sheepdog. The trumpeting breeds of pigeon are so named because of their unique vocalizations which sound vaguely like low laughter
Bokhara Trumpeter (Bokharski Barabanshik)
Bolle’s Pigeon (Columba bollii)
Bonin Wood-pigeon (Columba versicolor) was endemic to Nakodo-jima (“Nakondo” is a frequent spelling error) and Chichi-jima in the Ogasawara Islands off the coast of Japan. It averaged a total length of 45 cm and was known from four recorded specimens, the first from 1827. The Bonin Wood-pigeon died out late in the 19th century as a result of deforestation, hunting and predation by introduced rats and cats. The last known specimen was taken in 1889.

Laurel Pigeon (Columba junoniae): Endemic to the Canary Islands. A rare resident breeder in the mountain laurel forest zone, it builds a stick nest in a tree. There it lays one white egg. At 40-43 cm, it looks like a very dark Wood Pigeon. It is a basically dark brown bird, with a dark pink breast. The lack of any white markings, together with its darker markings, distinguish it from the other species. Brown, rather than dark grey plumage, and the lack of dark bands on the grey tail distinguish it from the other pigeon endemic to the Canary Islands, Bolle’s Pigeon. Its flight is quick and performed by regular beats. An occasional sharp flick of the wings is characteristic of pigeons in general. Often, the bird takes off with a loud clattering. The call is a hoarse hiccuped cooing.

Sri Lanka Woodpigeon (Columba torringtoni): Endemic resident breeding bird in the mountains of Sri Lanka. This species nests in damp evergeen woodlands in the central highlands, building a stick nest in a tree and laying a single white egg. Its flight is quick, with the regular beats and an occasional sharp flick of the wings which are characteristic of pigeons in general. Most of its food is vegetable. Normally silent it utters an owl-like hoo call in the breeding season. It is 36cm in length. Its upperparts and tail are dark grey, and the head and underparts are lilac, becoming paler on the belly. There is a black-and-white chessboard pattern on the nape. It can be quite easily seen in the woods of the Horton Plains National Park.
