Several top national experts featured on HBO’s The Weight of the Nation talk about genetics and the environment’s effect on obesity:

David Altshuler, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School: “When it comes to obesity, for the vast majority of people, there’s no one gene that makes a difference. There’s many, many genes, dozens, perhaps hundreds … each of which has a small effect on the obesity in the population, but which add up to a susceptibility when exposed to this environment we live in, for getting more overweight or not.

“There’s no doubt that genetics, the DNA that we inherit from our parents, affects how much we weigh. There’s also no doubt that the environment we live in affects how much we weigh. There’s no nature vs. nurture. There’s nature and nurture.

“When it comes to smoking or drinking, people generally have to go cold turkey. But fundamentally we have to eat. You know, people can’t stop eating. This calls for a somewhat lonely journey of self-control. We underestimate how hard it is to change your behavior, not once, not for a week or a month till you’re cured, but to change it every day for the rest of your life.”

Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: “If you go with the flow in America today, you will end up overweight or obese, as two thirds of Americans do. The weight of the nation is not healthy. And to get it healthy, we’re all going to have to do our part.

“We are seeing changes. They’re not gonna be overnight, they’re not quick, but they’re happening. And they are going to help control the weight of the nation.

“Fifty years ago, tobacco was ubiquitous. And I think in 50 years we’ll see the ubiquity of unhealthy foods today in a similar light.”

Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University: “There’s this relentless and powerful marketing of foods. You’re basically taught that you can eat everywhere, you can eat every hour of the day and that there’s something gloriously wonderful about eating foods that are high in sugar, fat and salt.

“They (food companies) have so many billions of dollars at stake in their profits that they’ll do everything they can to fight the changes that are really necessary to help address the world’s obesity problem.

“You might despair at this and say, ‘Well, what can we do about it because these companies are so powerful?’ That’s what was said about the tobacco companies 30 and 40 years ago and look what happened to them. … So if the tobacco industry can be taken on successfully by the public health world, then I don’t see any reason why the food industry can’t be the same.”

Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health: “If we don’t now take this as a really serious, urgent national priority, we are all of us individually and as a nation gonna pay a really serious price.”

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says the radiation therapy sessions he has been receiving in Cuba for cancer have had an impact on his health.

Chavez made his remarks Friday to thousands of his supporters at a rally to mark the 10th anniversary of his return to power after a two-day coup.

The Venezuelan leader, who has been traveling to and from Cuba for his latest rounds of radiation, says the treatments have affected his physical strength, but he is doing well.

He travels to Cuba Saturday for a radiation treatment. Chavez told the crowd he is considering staying in Cuba for an entire week, longer than his recent trips. He said to wanted to avoid “coming and going.”

Little is known about the 57-year-old socialist leader’s condition. Chavez has endured two surgeries since being diagnosed last year for what is believed to be an aggressive cancer.

He says the latest surgery was successful and that he will be fit to win a new six-year term in October. He has been in office for 13 years.

Chavez underwent an operation in February in Cuba to remove a tumor from his pelvic region. A tumor was removed from the same area last year.

Obese mothers are likely to give birth to babies that are up to 17 per cent smaller than they should have been, making them more vulnerable to diseases, according to a new University of Illinois study.

Even if they eat a healthy diet when they are pregnant, their babies will develop in an unhealthy environment that places the infants at risk for future health problems, researchers behind the study said.

“We can see fat sequestered in the placentas of obese mothers when it should be going to the baby to support its growth. The nutrient supply region in the placenta of an obese mother is half the size of that of a normal-weight mother, even when both are eating the same healthy diet,” said Yuan-Xiang Pan, a U of I professor of nutrition.

Pan blames what he calls the obesogenic environment of the mother, which includes increased triglycerides, high levels of the hormone leptin, and elevated amounts of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) circulating in the obese expectant mother’s body.

Triglyceride and NEFA levels are nearly twice as high in obese mothers, even when they consume healthy diets during pregnancy, he said.

“My advice is, lose weight well before you become pregnant,” Pan said.

In the study, the scientist compared the placentas of obese rats fed a healthy diet throughout their pregnancies with the placentas of obesity-resistant rats fed the same diet.

“Although the obese females didn’t gain much weight on the healthy diet, the obesogenic environment remained, and it affected nutrient transport regulation in the placenta,” he said.

As a result, obese mothers gave birth to babies that were up to 17 per cent smaller than they should have been. The consequences for those infants may be lifelong, making them more susceptible to disease, he noted.

Pan, an epigeneticist, was able to demonstrate for the first time that the DKK1 gene regulates certain aspects of lipid metabolism in the placenta through the WNT signaling pathway.

“Understanding this process should help us identify some biomarkers that would allow a potential mother’s doctor to say yes, you’ve lost weight, the chemical conditions that were created by your excess weight are gone, and this is a good time for you to become pregnant,” he said.

Biomarkers could also be useful in testing new babies. If doctors can see that the mother’s pre-pregnancy and pregnancy diets were deficient, there might be ways to compensate for that poor prenatal environment, he said.

“The point I’d like to get across to women of child-bearing age is that they must pay attention to their weight well before they become pregnant if they want to have a healthy baby. Obesity creates unhealthful conditions in the mother’s body that take time to correct. A healthy mother will give birth to a baby that is more resistant to disease,” he said.

A Peterborough firm has been temporarily closed by environmental health bosses amid fears that drinks and yoghurts it makes could cause illness.

Kepenek, based in Unit 23, Wulfric Square, Bretton, Peterborough, has been served with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice by Peterborough City Council to temporarily stop it from trading.

The firm makes yoghurts and juice drinks that are sold in newsagents across the country.

Following an investigation, the council found the products were not produced in line with food safety guidelines and could have harmful bacteria in them.

Samantha Olive, the council’s principal environmental health officer, said: “Anyone who has these items should throw them away immediately and not drink them.

“They were not produced in line with food safety requirements and could be contaminated with harmful bacteria which has the potential to make people ill.”

The alarm about the drinks and yoghurts was first sounded by Hull City Council, which received a complaint from a member of the public about the quality of Kepenek’s Quzwan Kurdish Style Yogurt and Nazanin Kurdish Style Juice.

Officials thought the drink could cause illness and, because the business had a Peterborough address on each bottle, contacted Peterborough City Council.

The council’s environmental health department investigated the concerns and found that although the business was based in the city, it was not on the database of Peterborough Food Registered Premises.

As a result, in addition to the health concerns about its products, the business was not trading legally.

Inspectors visited Kepenek on February 17 and issued the owner with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice to temporarily close it down.

This was later supported by a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order granted by Peterborough Magistrates’ Court.

The three shops in Peterborough that stock Kepenek products have been told to stop selling them, as have Kepenek’s customers who sell the products in shops in Manchester, Leicester, Birmingham, Coventry, Hull and Wolverhampton.

The firm will remain closed until the health risks are addressed.

Mrs Olive said the council was working to help the business so that it could re-open and continue in the future with improved standards.

The council recommends anyone who has drunk the Nazanin juice or eaten the Quzwan yoghurt to seek medical help if they have any health concerns.

In response to a growing number of reported cases of swine flu on college campuses, a trio of U.S. health officials hosted a conference call Friday with several college newsrooms to discuss methods to limit the spread of the disease.

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius was joined by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Dr. Beth Bell of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in saying that the best treatment for the disease is prevention.

Duncan said that swine flu, known formally as H1N1, needs to be taken seriously to minimize the impact on the education process that a spread of the new influenza strain could have.

“We want colleges to be part of the solution,” Duncan said. “There has been remarkable partnership with agencies and the public. We all have collaborated to work hard.”

The trio, speaking on behalf of their respective institutions, advocated three primary ways to control the spread of the virus: prevention, close monitoring and common sense.

Duncan described a number of easy ways to prevent getting or spreading H1N1: wash your hands thoroughly, sneeze into your sleeve, practice social isolation when sick, keep your dorm rooms clean, do not attend class when sick and do not return to class until 24 hours after your fever breaks.

Bell said that this flu season has begun much earlier than normal, and that nearly all cases are H1N1. Flu has been reported in all 50 states but the highest numbers of incidents are in the southeast. She added that emergency room visits and activity in universities’ health services departments for flu have increased, with 21 states reporting widespread influenza activity on college campuses.

Bell said college students are advised to receive the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available in October. One dose will be sufficient as young people have robust immune systems.

Antiviral treatment is available for those in high-risk groups, including women who are pregnant, those with lung or heart problems, asthma or diabetes. if you are in a high-risk group and get sick, contact a doctor immediately to see whether you should get antivirals, Bell said.

“H1N1 is so dangerous because it is a new strain of flu and we can’t be sure it won’t mutate into something more virulent,” Sebelius said. “Fortunately, the vaccines that we have been preparing since April are just as effective on the flu now as it was then. This is one way of indicating that the flu is in the same form as it has been for the past five months.”

The best protection by far, Sebelius said, is the vaccine, adding that Congress has made H1N1 awareness a major campaign at the request of President Barack Obama. Sebelius said that inoculating as many people as possible is one way to prevent its spread.

Bell said CDC statistics show more people dying from seasonal flu each year than have died from H1N1. She said one thing to be concerned about when comparing the seasonal flu with H1N1 is that the seasonal flu attacks those above the age of 65, while H1N1 mainly affects people under the age of 25.

There is no general suggestion for when colleges would have to consider stopping classes if an outbreak happens, Bell said. She said the policy on those decisions must be made locally, in consultation with local health officials and the university as a whole. Each university must look at its own capacities on a case-by-case basis.

“It is important that people take this seriously,” Sebelius said. “The economic and social impact of having millions of Americans miss work for 3-5 days, or of kids getting sick and their parents having to miss work involves the potential of businesses losing potential workers and workforces that can’t have continuity of business with so many employees sick. People need to do the little things to prevent the spread of H1N1.”

UA Campus Health Services will acquire the vaccine in October. Campus Health’s Web site strongly encourages students who think they have symptoms of H1N1 flu — fever over 102 degrees, body aches, sore throat, cough and runny nose, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea — to stay home and call either a Campus Health Triage Nurse at (520) 621-6490 or the Campus Health After-Hours On Call Provider at (520) 570-7898.

Tough guys who buy into ideals of masculinity are much less likely to seek preventive healthcare services, such as a prostate exam, compared with other men.

The new finding, based on survey data, reveals that such manly beliefs could help to explain the lower life expectancy of men compared with women.

In the United States in 2005, life expectancy for women averaged about 80 years, while for men it was about 75 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“This research strongly suggests that deep-seated masculinity beliefs are one core cause of men’s poor health, inasmuch as they reduce compliance with recommended preventative health services,” said study researcher Kristen Springer of Rutgers University in New Jersey.

So while acting the part of a “real man” can attract fertile gals and even help a person to heal faster from injury, keeping up the tough-guy part could mean dodging the doctor’s office.

The study will be presented today at the American Sociological Association’s annual meeting in San Francisco.

Springer and Rutgers colleague Dawne Mouzon, a sociology graduate student, examined data from 1,000 middle-aged men who participated in the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study in 2004. The researchers looked at participants’ masculinity beliefs, socioeconomic status and compliance with three commonly recommended annual healthcare procedures for middle-aged men: a physical exam, flu shot and prostate examination.

To reveal their level of machoness, participants rated eight items on a scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree. These statements included, “When a husband and wife make decisions about buying major things for the home, the husband should have final say;” and “It bothers me when a man does something that I consider ‘feminine.’”

Men who strongly endorsed macho ideals were 26 percent less likely than other participants to have received a physical exam in the prior year, nearly 30 percent less likely to have completed a prostate exam and nearly 50 percent less likely to have obtained all three preventive services in the prior year.

While previous research has shown higher socioeconomic status promotes better health, the new research found that wasn’t the case for the manly men.

“As job status increases among men who have strong masculinity beliefs, the likelihood that they will obtain preventative healthcare declines significantly,” Springer said. “These findings provide some insight into the persistent gender paradox in health whereby men have a lower life expectancy at birth relative to women, despite having higher socioeconomic resources.”

(Compared with a woman, a man’s life expectancy has been found to be five years shorter and he is expected to have higher rates of 12 of the 15 leading causes of death, the researchers note.)

In fact, men with low-status, stereotypically macho jobs, such as machine operators, truck drivers and construction workers, were more likely than other participants to head to the doctor.

The researchers suggest several reasons for why macho men would avoid preventive healthcare. For instance, men in high-status jobs “do not want to feel emasculated by placing themselves in the subordinate position of patient,” the researchers note. Perhaps, they add, such men avoid the doctor because they have the resources to remedy any resulting health problems.

In addition, men with high-status jobs practice more autonomy and freedom to disagree with authority opinions and so, in the same way, they may just ignore health recommendations, the researchers suggest.

To figure out the cause and to extend the results to a broader population, Springer says the study should be replicated in a sample with more diversity, as the participants in this survey were primarily white, middle-aged men with high-school degrees.

In the meantime, barring a complete removal of masculine norms, in order to increase men’s likelihood of seeking preventive care, “we could flip the idea of masculinity on its head,” Springer told LiveScience. For instance, a public service announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows men in hospital gowns doing manly activities, such as helping their son fix the car, Springer said.

Breast cancer is one of the many health risks that a woman has to worry about, but just a few changes could actually reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by approximately 40 percent. There are approximately 70,000 cases of breast cancer annually in the United States, of which some could be prevented with lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, breastfeeding their infants, getting 30 to 60 minutes of exercise every day and limiting their alcohol consumption.

The American Institute for Cancer Research/World Cancer Fund, which is a Washington, D.C. nonprofit research group, reviewed the links between breast cancer and exercise, diet and body weigh in approximately 1,000 studies to come to this conclusion.

Susan Higginbotham, who is the director of research for the American Institute for Cancer Research, said, “We want women to know there are things they can do every day to prevent breast cancer. For instance, they can get physically active every day. As best they can, maintain a healthy body weight. Try not to gain weight, if you already have a healthy body weight. If you are overweight, get back to a healthy body weight. If you drink alcohol at all, limit drinking to one drink per day.” She also stated that just adding any amount of physical activity during your day is beneficial, including waking and climbing stairs. To reduce the risk of cancer is general, diets should be mostly plant-based, emphasizing on fruits, beans, whole grains, and vegetables, and limit the intake of red meats.

A weight gain of 34 pounds can increase the chances of breast cancer as much as 68 percent in younger women. The risk also increases with age and in proportion to an increased body weight. After age forty, a 12-pound weight gain can double the risk of breast cancer. Women that are over the age of fifty at maximum weight gain have triple the chances of developing breast cancer.

The new study published updates the breast cancer chapter of the report written in 2007 called “Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective,” which is a review of 873 studies. The research groups reviewed another 81 studies for the new report and then published the results on www.dietandcancerreport.org.

Dr. Michael Sabel, who is a surgical oncologist and associate professor of surgery at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, stated that t research supports these findings. He also said, “This is absolutely correct. The evidence is very strong, if not overwhelming, that lifestyle changes such as maintaining healthy body weight and exercise can not only help prevent cancer, it can have a greater impace on breast cancer outcomes than chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.”

So if you have a history of breast cancer that runs in your family or are just generally concerned about the risks of developing breast cancer you can change your chance now by changing to a healthier lifestyle. You just might feel better as well by exercising, eating right, and maintaining a healthy body weight.

It is often said that beauty is only skin deep. Obviously this is an overstatement, because true beauty exudes as much from within, and is just one of the rewards of a natural health lifestyle. Care of the skin though, should be included as a part of your total fitness program.

Diet is important in skin care. Fried foods and saturated fats should be eliminated, in favour of fruit and vegetables, if greasy skin is to be avoided. Stress can bring about hormonal changes, due to increased adrenal gland activity, which can exacerbate a greasy skin problem. You should be aware of your stress levels and, where possible, make adjustments to your lifestyle to bring about reductions.

Not all fats are bad for you or your skin, and you should ensure that your intake of essential fatty acids, (EFA’s) is sufficient, which can assist with flaky skin problems. Fish is an excellent source of EFA, and should be regularly included, as part of a healthy diet. Nuts and seeds will also help, and could be included at breakfast, or even as a healthy snacking alternative!

Collagen has been the subject of frequent press reports, usually when used in cosmetic injections, for the ‘benefit’ of famous people. The growth of new collagen can be naturally encouraged by an adequate intake of vitamin C in your diet. Fruit and vegetables are the best natural source, and are a tonic for your skin, as well as sustaining your general health. Smoking is known to inhibit the absorption of vitamin C. Therefore, it’s bad for your skin as well as being bad for your total well being.

Our lifestyle choices do much to influence our natural good health, as evidenced by a healthy, glowing skin, reflecting inner health and beauty.

Cycling is very enjoyable activity is the main fact about me to love it, is very beneficial to my health also. Cycling is also a great way to get fit and can result in many health benefits too.

Lots of good reviews and also results got from mine fitness adviser about cycling which want to share here.

Cycling Health Benefits:-

(1) First of all, Cycling is what’s known as ‘aerobic’ exercise, improves the consumption of oxygen in the body. Increase heart rate and get us to breath heavily but not out of breath.

(2) Increase our blood circulation and reduce the risk of high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and heart diseases.

(3) This aerobic activity can burn up to 300 calories per 30 minutes. It’s really very effective in reducing stress and depression, boost our confidence and leave us with a high self esteem.

(4) Cycling on a daily basis will help minimize all of these heath issues whilst lengthening your lifespan at the same time. The physical benefits of cycling and the improvement to your health far out way the reasons for not doing so on a daily basis and should be looked at seriously to maintain a healthy life.

Cycling Risk Factors:-

But also we have to prepare our self to prevent serious injury from cycling; to reduce the risk of serious injury is to use cycle helmets.

Cyclist training is also extremely important, and acquiring knowledge on how to maintain your cycle is equally as important as learning how to ride in heavy traffic conditions. Defective breaks and low tyre pressure can quite often lead to accidents, and it is important that your cycle is in a road-worthy condition at all times.

“Training helps you to be confident in traffic and adopt a road position where you can be seen, communicate clearly with other road users and be aware of traffic movements”

I and mine fitness adviser discussed about Online Cycling Buying Guide Last Month to easily buy Bikes for Kids and Other Cycling accessories. She suggested me for ShopWiki.com.

And Finally I found Bicycles Buying Guide, Mountain Bikes Buying Guide, Comfort Bikes Buying Guide and also different types of Bike Shorts. After got lots of good experience about online guidance for cycling equipments, also suggested to other friend.

Lifestyle changes, faster living and trends affect what we eat. More than 23% of the population eats one of the day’s meals away from home on working days. On days off, this percentage is doubled. A lot of people choose fast food like burgers and fries (McDonalds alone serves 13,000 customers a minute worldwide) to satisfy their hunger but it is extremely bad for our body over the long-term.

The fats used in these fast food chains are usually trans-fat which decrease the good cholesterol while increasing the bad cholesterol. A normal set-meal will give you a high calories content, low fibre count and enough sodium to fulfil an average person’s daily requirement.

If you really have to take fast food, try these methods:

To cut fat, stick to small portions of thinly-fried chips and avoid salads soaked in oily dressings.

Ask for a burger without mayonnaise (which adds 11 grams a tablespoon) and melted cheese and you’ll save 200 calories.

For a drink, choose orange juice or water rather than fizzy drinks which contain little more than sugar and water with virtually no nutrients.

Never go for the supersized portions or double orders even if you are very hungry. The amount of calories and unhealthy stuff which goes down at one sitting may take days of exercises to compensate.
